This kind of stuff and other “flare” methods are essential for playing clubs where a selection of hits are expected.

Having only so many tracks of a particular compatible key, there’s only so many paths to take. I’ve started breaking free of the key compatibility search and just finding a song I’m feeling strongly about, even if it’s a very different tempo and key.

Also, as other people have mentioned, many club owners/managers expect you to play specific songs or styles and not to play others. I was bored with my hipster gigs a few years ago, so I took a regular residency at a popular queer bar in Akron, Ohio that filled up with college kids after midnight because it had the only dancefloor on that side of town. I alternated weekends with a DJ who had been there for many years and literally played exactly the same songs in the same order every night. I was a breath of fresh air, and all the bar staff was always stoked when it would be my weekend on the decks. I figured out what the regulars expected to hear and had my own fun in between as this article suggests. It was all love until the crusty old owner asked me to stop playing rap one night when I had the floor jam-packed with college kids at 1:30 AM. I finished that night and politely gave the gig up after rocking that club for over a year. I’m sure the same other DJ is still there playing his predictable and repetitive set night after night to this day.

OTS has had this for years (and the software runs for years with no failure). Why have Serato, Traktor etc. not cottoned on to this?
